Last Days of Youngdo

We are officially unemployed! And it feels great! Here are some pictures from our last days at Youngdo. We played games, watched Halloween movies, had pizza and Ramen parties, and had a great time with our students.

Classroom Impressions, Final Youngdo Edition

Well, after 13 months, our time at YES Youngdo English School has come to an end. In a week we will be headed to the south of India on vacation for 3 weeks. Then, we will go home to the US on Thanksgiving Day for 3 months before returning to Korea for another year (at a different school). We hope to catch up with you all back in the US!

We leave you with some words of wisdom from some of the students that made our time at Youngdo so memorable.

During a conversation about nature:
"Teacher, nature's bad thing is the dung."

In an essay comparing Mexican and Korean cultures:
"I think Mexico's greeting is really strange. They match their cheek and they make sound like kiss to someone. If in Korea we do like that, we can go to police station. It's really strange. We just shake our hand or bend our back to old people. It is different."

A student was telling me about a run-in with his mom:
Hans: "Sometimes mom is nice, but sometimes mom change to devil! She is hit me! Many time!"
Laura Teacher: "Oh dear, I'm sorry. Does she hit you with her hand?"
Hans: "No--with sword! Do you see this damage?"

Our last teaching day is Tuesday, so please check back a little later for some pictures of our last day.

Note: there's a bit too much going on here to accurately transcribe this and still meet the high editorial standards quality demanded by the McCoKorea house style, but we do recommend that you click to enlarge in order to fully enjoy this monster. We especially want to draw your attention to the description of Mrs. Pitt at the bottom of the shirt:

"Angelina Jolie, Hollywood's Goofy Blond Goddess, is at the Top of Her Game."

Chuseok

This past weekend was the Chuseok, the Korean equivalent to Thankgiving. Its a three-day harvest festival held during the full moon in mid-Autumn. Koreans celebrate by returning to their hometowns en masse to pay respect to their ancestors. They wear traditional clothes called "Hanbok," eat rice cakes called "Songpyeon," and give gifts called "Tuna and Spam."

Kimchi Donuts

Dunkin' Donuts now offers kimchi-stuffed donuts. I tried one, and I have to say it wasn't half bad. Kind of reminded me of a Hot Pocket. There was even a little piece of ham tucked inside.

Classroom Impressions, Volume 4

Hello dear readers. Today marks our 365th day in Korea, so we thought we'd celebrate with a round of Classroom Impressions.

Discussing the meaning of the word "creepy"
Student 1: "Ghosts are creepy!"
Student 2: "But Teacher, sometimes ghost is cute like kitty cat."

Our students are very interested in why Chris and I are always talking to each other.
Student: "Laura Teacher and Chris Teacher is date? Go to the nightclub?"

2 boy students, Denny and Hans, were fighting one day:
Denny: "Teacher! I have very important secret! Hans is GIRL!"
Hans (getting up to throw a chair): "Congratulations, Denny--Today you are die!"

Denny: "Hans, you are a girl and you are going to have a baby!"
(Hans gets up again to throw a chair)
Denny: "No, no. Don't worry. Your baby will love you!"

Student: "Laura Teacher, I think your anger gauge is here (points to the ceiling)."

This is a picture Laura's 4th graders drew of a very strong Honeybucket (our cat). You can see Laura on the ground in green.

A Glimpse Inside Laura Teacher's Class

As a new semester begins, classes are being moved around and unfortunately I will be losing one of my favorite classes to another teacher. My "Basic 3" class of 2nd/3rd graders has been such a positive part of my experience in Korea. They are quick learners and extremely kind and funny. I have been teaching them how to sign the alphabet in ASL to help improve their spelling, so please check out the video below of the class showing off what they learned.

This is a picture of the wall behind my desk. Thanks to Aunt Beth for sending the comics!

This student, Michael, really caught on to learning how to sign the alphabet.

McCoKorea August Hibernation

My gosh! Has it really almost been a month since our last update? We are almost finished with August Intensives (working 9am-8pm M-F), so we should be getting back to our usual, slightly less sporadic posting schedule very soon.

Really, Lotteria?

On a street crawling with English teachers....

A new Lotteria (Korea's answer to McDonald's) just popped up across the street from our academy. Judging by this sign on the storefront, it seems that they are actively trying to sabotage our careers as English teachers.

Mud Fest

Last weekend, we got mudded.

The Boryeong Mudfest is an annual festival that has become sort of like an oozier (and boozier!) Mecca for all foreigners in South Korea. Supposedly the Boryeong mud is really healthy and will do wonders for those crow's feet of yours, but really, its just another opportunity to mud wrestle hundreds of naked strangers.

A few days before the festival this year, some school kids took a field trip to Boryeong, and more than 200 of them were stricken with a case of dermititis and hospitalized. According to a festival organizer the presumed cause of the outbreak was "because of some contaminated water coming from Daecheon Stream and an unhygienic environment downtown."

This news didn't seem scare away anyone away from Mudfest, and judging by the average mudfester, I have to assume that most them were probably expecting to contract an itchy rash one way or another.

When we finally arrived in Boryeong on Saturday afternoon, we were a little out of place stepping into the unhygienic environment downtown completely sober and unsullied. But after a shirtless beer run, and a long trek down the beach away from the central festivities, we found a quiet little mud oasis that we could call our own. Mudfest Jr. had these basins of mud where you could coat your body in peace without worrying about getting mud-groped from behind by a GI on R&R. When the mud dries on your skin, it looks exactly like the zombie makeup from "Dawn of the Dead." There was also a mud-slide and a mud-air castle that were more fun than they should have been.

Thanks to the HOOG for the pictures.

For dinner that night, we had samgyeopsal (literally 3 layer meat; its looks like thick bacon), but for an appetizer, I finally got to try something that I've wanted to eat since I came to South Korea: sannakji, or live baby octopus tentacles. They come out on the plate still squirming and the suckers will attach to anything nearby--including tongues. We spent most of dinner waggling our tongues out of our mouths with little tentacles hanging on for dear life. We are all college educated adults.

I'll try to post video from my phone soon.

Overall, Mud Fest was a great time, despite some torrential rains and a leaky tent. Also Laura got a skin rash (not from the mud though, probably from a spider that snuck into our tent...).
